I tried thinking of actual names but all I can think of is Blood Gulch stuck in my brain.  And hey, I could have just used the generator and copy and pasted but I figured why not just give you the source?

A town named Purgatory would be nice.  Type of place where angels and demons had a no fight agreement and they walk around disguised as humans interacting with each other.  Heck, add in a few mythologies for a good Neil Gaiman feel to it.

OK, so Purgatory is a name.  You probably don’t need the rest.

Solace. Hazard.  Prospect. Prophecy. Big Leg. Leeland. Pierson’s Ferry.

I imagine most names in the West are named after the first weird things that the settlers noticed while there. That’s the assumption behind the names below.

    Lizard Stump

    Empty Valley

    Pebble-in-Shoe Village

    Parched Orchard

    Freshwater Lake City

    Ornery Termite Town

    Rotten Hog

Can’t trust that list if it doesn’t include Felch, MI or Spread Eagle, WI.

As a side note, we always used to joke that Illinois led the nation in places named after other places.  London, Paris, Rome, Cairo, and Cuba were all within an afternoon’s drive from where I grew up.

I have Syracuse, Utica, Rome, Carthage, Denmark, Copenhagen, Mexico and Ithaca all within 90 min drive. I’m sure there are others.

I like one word names for wester themed towns.

Providence, Hope, Eureka, Plains (all real places).

This open a opportunity for a Meta name for the campaign.

There’s also lots of fun maps if you choose a real place:

Brohogan Flats (a bustling university town by the sea)

Buttneck Crag (marshy lowlands famous for it’s world class plumbers)

Hobo-Whiskey Springs (where the little streams of alcohol come trickling down the rocks)

Düngenberg (a charming German cattle ranching town)

Lake Middenosa (a lead mining town with a foul polluted lake on the border of Mexico)

    ….I could go on.

It’s the itinerary for Thought Railways’ train No.5 — ‘train of thought’, geddit?  Please, save some annoyed groans for my list.

    • Empty Bucket
    • Mettle
      (i.e. testing your mettle.)
    • Flat Butte
    • Butte Mesa
    • Big Buttes
(okay, enough with the Butte jokes)
    • Bootspit
(i.e. insulting someone by spitting on their boots… of course…)
    • Gallows
    • Fortitude
(this one is good for other themes, too.  otherwise overused as a name for ships, extraterrestrial and naval.)
    • Blessing
(so, either it was for some weary settlers, or it wasn’t for some disappointed ones)
    • Worthless
      (sardonic)

If this is quasi-historical, you could also research some good aboriginal names: Anasazi, Apache, Commanche, Navajo, et al.

    Actual place names:
    Truth or Consequences, NM
Stovepipe Wells, CA (middle of Death Valley. I’ve actually been there)
Cut and Shoot, TX (outside of Houston)
Then there’s the two towns (18 miles apart): Nutt and Hatch, NM (living between them, therefore, puts you in the Nutthatch)
Enoch, UT (for the Vampire fans out there)
    Lovelock, NV
    Ironside, ID
    Unity, ID
    Pilot Rock, ID
    Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada
